The Only Bottle of Water You'll Ever NeedWe didn't think you could bottle pure awesomeness, but then we got our hands on a Hydros. Hydros bottles filter water from kitchen sinks, bathroom taps, and water fountains into delicious and safe filtered bottled water on-the-go.Over one billion people don't have access to clean drinking water. For every Hydros Bottle sold, Hydros provides two thousand gallons of fresh water to the village of Gundom in Cameroon, Africa. By partnering with Engineers Without Borders, Hydros is able to deliver fresh water to the thirsting Cameroonian village of Gundom while making your water less expensive, more delicious, and less wasteful here at home. In fact, according to the Pacific Institute, from start to finish, bottled water consumes between 1100 and 2000 times more energy than tap water does. The High Cost of Bottled Water:~ Thirty-eight billion water bottles are discarded into landfills every year.~ Last year, consumers spent $15 billion on disposable bottled water. ~ Bottling water has produced more than 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide. ~ It takes three liters of water to produce one liter of bottled water. ~ Consumers use 1.5 million tons of plastic for water bottles each year; less than 5% of this plastic waste is recycled. ~ You can get approx. 450 gallons of tap water for the price of one bottled water. ~ Producing the bottles for American consumption required the equivalent of more than 17 million barrels of oil, not including the energy for transportation. Meet the Founders: Jay and Aakash Back in Spring 2009, Jay and Aakash made the decision to start Hydros at 4 AM in the basement of a University of Pennsylvania study hall. After finishing as semifinalists in a business plan competition, they walked away from their future jobs, emptied their tiny bank accounts (saving was not a priority in college), and set out to develop the first prototype. They linked up with their friend Winston from Johns Hopkins and leveraged the expertise of Innova Dynamics, an advanced materials technology firm, for filtration development. In less than a year they found investors (real live angels), manufacturing partners (Hydros is made locally in the US), and their first retail placement, thanks Whole Foods.Photo of Jay & Aakash courtesy of enPhilly.com.
